| Warts (Verruca) are caused by an
infectious virus. The virus gets into the skin through a cut so small
you do not know it is there. The virus particle gets into the
deepest layer of the epidermis and takes up residence in the local
cells. It causes an uncontrolled multiplication of skin cells. Soon you
have so many cells with virus particles that the clump is visible as a
wart. Since the virus can spread to other parts of the body, it is
important to have it treated before it spreads. For example a wart on
the big toe can spread to the second toe just by touching it. You end
up with warts on each toe that are kind of mirror images of each other. |

| TREATMENT: |

The laser uses a special wavelength of light
that targets the water in the wart cells. It heats them up so rapidly
that the virus is killed. Treatment takes only a minute. The wart will
dry up and fall off within four weeks leaving normal skin. There is
very minimal risk of scarring with this treatment. Laser treatment is
much safer than cryosurgery (freezing warts off) because freezing
usually causes a white spot in the skin where the wart was. It may be
necessary to repeat the treatment in 1 – 2 months in the case of larger
warts. |
